Technology
Day Held at School of Career & Technical Education
The
School of Career & Technical Education (SCTE) hosted “Technology
Day” on Friday, May 8. The purpose of the day was
to introduce high school and career and technical students
to the advanced and diverse technology that is being used
in industries.
“The goal of Technology Day was to show students some
of the technology that is used and the organizations and
agencies that are using it,” said Earl Richard, Director
of the SCTE. “Some students may never have thought
of a future where they are using technology, developing technology,
improving existing technologies, repairing it, or even teaching
it. Technology Day gave students the opportunity to view
some advanced technology first hand.”
Medical, law enforcement, government, and other agencies
participated in the event and talked with students about
the various types of technology they use in their jobs. One
popular area where the students gathered was among the different
law enforcement agencies including Homeland Security.
Students had the opportunity to wear their body armor and
helmets, tour their vehicles, and view other types of equipment
and technology these agencies use daily. NAHS student Latisha
Kimmons said she enjoyed looking at all the technology in
the police car. “I got to see the camera in the car
and even was able to turn on the siren.”
Another exciting attraction for the students was watching
the Air Evac helicopter land. Students were given the opportunity
to take a look inside the helicopter and talk with
Air Evac personnel about technology they use in their daily
work.
Agencies participating included: Baptist Memorial Hospital – Union
County; Mississippi National Guard; National Weather Service;
Tennessee Valley Authority; Homeland Security; Mississippi
Organ Recovery; New Albany Police Department; Union County
Sheriff’s Department; Mississippi Forestry Commission;
Northeast Mississippi Community College; Air Evac; New Albany
Fire Department.

agencies.
